What is ISPS? What is an ISPS Audit?

ISPS stands for International Ship and Port Facility Security Code and it defines a selection of security measures, requirements and recommendations.  The purpose of these security measures is to improve the security of ships and port facilities.  ISPS was developed to prevent future terrorist and other security risks. In order to improve security in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), ISPS Code is implemented via chapter XI-2 Special measures and includes a mandatory component and a recommended component.

The goal of the ISPS Code is to determine levels of security with appropriate security measures and procedures. The Code allows Government organizations to balance threat levels with appropriate changes in the vulnerability of ship and port facilities.  As a structured framework, the Code provides a standardized way of evaluating risk. ISPS helps ensure that ship and port facility security is a risk management activity.
