Orcades Marine supported the transport of the world’s powerful tidal turbine by Orbital Marine Power called the “O2” by providing the Marine Warranty Survey (MWS) for the tow. The tidal turbine left Dundee yesterday and is on its way to be commissioned at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) tidal site at Fall of Warness.
The tow of the 680-tonne tidal turbine was undertaken by Orkney based marine contractor Leask Marine. The O2 has the ability to generate 2MW of clean, predictable electricity to meet the demand of around 2,000 UK homes and offset approximately 2,200 tonnes of CO2 production per year. This is an impressive feat of engineering!
